The beers from The Abbaye of St Sixtus have been increasingly difficult to get over the last year due to the increased interest in bottled beer.
Newspapers and worldwide beer websites have, in there eagerness to report on fringe beers of the world, caused a supply and demand problem.
Subsequently the price of these beers, if you can get them, has risen.
The Monastery have rationed supply to there customers, for some time now, allowing only a few bottles per visit. The area the Monestary is in is very easy to get too but you really have to look out for the signs. From Calais, drive up the coast and follow the signs for Lille. As you travel into the interior and well before Lille, you will see signs for Popperinge. Just to the north of Popperinge you will find some very very very small signs, situated on the main roads taking you down single lane farm tracks. The Monestary can be found surrounded by farm land.
To collect cases….yeah right…there is a horse shoe shaped track next to the Monastery. You drive round with your boot open and load up.
Across the road, from the Monastery is a new pub and café/restaurant. It is a modern, light, airy, open plan building with exposed beams. It can get very busy but at least you will get to try the beer. As you walk through the door, to the left, is the shop. It is small but does the job. You can buy small quantities of beer. There are gift packs, glasses, postcards, sweets and of course the Abbaye’s cheese. They even sell tablets made from the spent yeast (I think) that helps with energy!!!
